I want to start a business selling purses and handbags and maybe baby quilts but I don't have that much $ right now. I really like Amy Butler style of fabric. Does anyone know where I can get fabric that's similar to that for less? Or any other cute, modern printed fabric that's inexpensive? Any suggestions on starting this kind of business?
There is a definite correlation between quality and price when it comes to fabric. Amy Butler fabric is around $9 - $10 per yard. You can get inexpensive fabric - as low as $3 per yard - from places like JoAnn Fabrics. However, you'll definitely be able to tell that the quality isn't as good. Not only does it feel rough and thin, the print isn't as clear and the colors are often muddy. Instead of looking for "cheap" fabric, try looking for great bargains on good fabric. JoAnn Fabrics does carry some good quality fabrics, so watch for big sales and sign up for their mailing list so you can use the 40% off coupons to buy a large single cut of fabric. They carry Alexander Henry fabrics, which are both good quality and fun and modern prints. They carry several other modern designers as well. You can also check out the Hancocks of Paducah website. When new lines come out, they discount the "old" stuff. It sells pretty quickly, so check the site frequently. There's some gorgeous stuff out there now for between $3 and $5 a yard. Scroll down and fine the Closeouts on the menu at the left side of their home page. I've purchased online from this company many times. The shipping is reasonable and they cut generously.
